Good guitar strings are essential to get the most out of your instrument. The sound of the guitar is affected by the type and quality of strings you use. For instance nylon strings sound much warmer and softer than steel strings. The style of music you play may also affect your choice of strings, for instance playing flamenco music requires a different sound to playing classical music. To get the best performance out of your guitar strings, you need to fit them correctly and keep them clean. Cheap guitars are usually sold with cheap guitar strings and using better-quality ones can improve the sound of the guitar. Therefore you should bear this mind when buying a cheap guitar. It can be worth splashing out and buying some really good guitar strings at least once just to see what difference it makes.
If you don't know what sort of strings you like, then you need to try some different ones to find the ones that suit you best. Likewise the type of guitar you are using affects how the strings work. For instance, using steel strings on an acoustic guitar designed for nylon strings may damage your guitar as steel strings put too much pressure on your guitar than nylon-string guitars are designed to withstand. Nylon strings on a steel-string guitar may not work either as they do not have enough tension to make the soundboard vibrate enough to make a noise.
Classical guitars are designed to use nylon guitar strings which come in a wide range of colors, tensions and windings. Higher-tension strings are slightly heavier to play and give a brighter sound. The strings used for the deeper notes need to be thicker. To make these strings, very fine, nylon wires are twisted together and then wound with metal wire, leading to their name - wound strings. Very thick, plain strings sound dull and lifeless which is why wound strings are used instead. Plain nylon strings are usually made with transparent nylon but can be bought in different colors. Keeping your strings clean can help make them last longer.
Instead of tensions, steel strings are measured in gauges or thicknesses. The smaller gauge strings sound lighter and softer, and their sound dies away quicker. The larger gauge strings give a heavier, louder tone which lasts longer. String gauges are measured in fractions of inches. Electric guitars use smaller gauge strings than acoustic ones, but the strings for a bass guitar need to be much thicker to produce the lower notes. Standard strings for electric guitars cost a bit more than a cinema ticket but strings for a bass guitar are more expensive. Jazz guitarists tend to go for thicker gauge strings.
