The guitar strap is attached to the guitar and goes over one shoulder, across the back and under the other arm allowing the guitarist to support the weight of the guitar, leaving his hands free to play the instrument. A right-handed player would have the strap going over the left shoulder and vice versa. When buying a guitar, it is worth trying it out both standing up and sitting down. Guitar straps vary in width, thickness, length and the material they are made out of.
How to attach the guitar strap
The strap attaches to strap buttons which are fixed to the guitar. Classical guitars do not have strap buttons as classical guitarists play their instruments sitting down. Steel-string guitars only have one strap button which is attached to the tail and the other end of the strap is fastened around the head under the strings just above the nut. The guitar must be balanced correctly so one end doesn't dip too high etc. The strap must be of the correct length so the guitar is in the best place for the guitarist to be able to reach all the notes and play comfortably. Keep adjusting the strap until it feels comfortable and the guitar is correctly positioned.
Different types of guitar straps
When buying a guitar strap, some considerations are:
Guitar straps can cost as little as the price of a cinema ticket or can cost over $100 depending on what you are after. The cheaper straps tend to be made of nylon which has the advantage of being reasonably elastic. However, it will wear quickly and won't be as long-lasting as leather. Leather stretches slightly over time but so long as you keep it clean and store it correctly a leather guitar strap should last for years. Avoid extremes of temperature or humidity as these will deteriorate the leather more quickly. Some straps are padded for a more comfortable fit. Watch out for metal fastenings and attachments which could damage your guitar.
The strap needs to be wide enough to take the weight of a heavy guitar without cutting into the flesh. The wider the strap, the more surface area there will be for the weight of the guitar to be distributed over. Custom-made straps can be made to your specification and will be more comfortable but can set you back a few hundred dollars. For the fashionably-minded, patterned, glittery or brightly-colored guitar straps are available.
