There are a variety of ways of hitting the strings to make different sounds depending on the style of music you play - for instance the way flamenco guitarist plays is very different from playing the classical guitar. Guitarists who play steel guitars or electric guitars tend to use guitar picks. In the past, picks were made out of bone. As guitar picks are cheap, it is possible to try a few out to see what suits you best.
Guitar picks come in all sorts of sizes, shapes, colors and weights. Which you should go for is mainly down to personal preference and what style of music you like to play. Brightly-colored picks are easier to find if you drop them. Thicker, heavier picks make a fuller sound than the lighter ones. The thinnest picks are only 1/64 inch thick. Thinner picks are more flexible on the whole but different types of plastic are used so it is possible to buy thick picks that are flexible and thin ones that are hard. If you require a really hard pick, then go for a metal one. Thin picks tend to be preferred for chord playing. Picks with a cork or rubber grip are easier to use if you have sweaty hands.
Fingerpicks and thumbpicks are guitar picks which can be attached to the fingers and thumbs so you have one pick per digit. They are shaped like rings so they can be slipped over the ends of the fingers and thumbs. File down any rough edges on your picks with a nail file or very fine sandpaper to prevent wear and tear the strings. Fingerpicking requires the guitarist to use the fingers to pluck a tune and chords while the bass line is played with the thumb. Some guitarists use their fingernails to play - for instance flamenco guitarists. To be able to do this you have to have strong, well-shaped, smooth nails. Playing with fingertips gives a softer, rounder sound. There is some music that has to be played with picks and some that has to be played with fingertips. Bass guitars are usually played with fingers but it is possible to buy picks for the bass - they are bigger than standard guitar picks.
