Buying a decent guitar on a budget doesn't have to break the bank. It is possible to pick up a cheap guitar from under $100 but these aren't always the best value for money. Part of the appeal of learning to play the guitar is that you don't have to outlay large sums of money to get started. Different factors affect the price of a guitar such as make, age, type or materials used. Acoustic, nylon-string, mass-produced guitars are the cheapest guitars on the market, while custom-made guitars made with the finest-quality materials can cost thousands. Steel-string guitars cost more than classical guitars because steel-string guitars have to be able to withstand the higher tension of steel strings. Electric guitars cost more than acoustic ones and don't forget that you need buy a guitar amp as well. Basses tend to cost a bit more than standard guitars.

Beginners should start off with a cheap guitar to practice on until they reach a level where it is worth spending more to get a better sound. An expensive guitar would need to be insured and wouldn't be suitable for carrying around for fear of damaging it. This would be a shame as part of the charm of a guitar, particularly an acoustic guitar, is that is fairly portable. However avoid going for the cheapest guitar you can find. You can get much more for your money if you are prepared to pay a little bit more.

Shopping around is the key to finding a cheap guitar. Compare prices across different manufacturers and stores. Shopping online can give you a chance to compare different deals on offer. You can buy guitars and guitar accessories through the Internet for less than you would in a store. Bear in mind that cheaper guitar parts won't last as long so may not be cost-effective in the long run. Check out online auctions and sites that sell second-hand or used guitars and this can be one way of getting a bargain. You can get a decent second-hand guitar for about the same as you would pay for a brand-new, cheap guitar, but the quality will be much better than the new one.
