The bass, when played in a band, provides the backdrop for the songs together with the drums. This does not necessarily mean that bass parts are simple though - they can get very complicated and can include anything from chord playing to solos.
The original bass guitars were acoustic and were huge due to lower pitches requiring more amplification - acoustic guitars amplify the sound they produce using the structure of the body of the instrument. After the introduction of electric guitars, bass guitarists soon felt the need to have electric bass guitars. Early bassists fitted pickups to their acoustic guitars or played the lower strings on electric guitars. However in the 1950s Leo Fender developed a solid-body bass guitar which was less unwieldy than the double basses.
Thicker strings are required to produce deeper notes. Bass guitars tend to have fewer strings than standard guitars. Typically a bass will have four strings but basses with five, six (same as standard guitars) or more strings are becoming more common. Bass guitars with more strings can be great for solos and certain playing techniques, but they are harder to play so they are not really the best guitars for beginners to learn on. A four-string bass guitar is tuned to the same notes as the bottom four strings of a standard guitar but one octave lower.
Buying a bass guitar
Guitars which cost more are better quality and sound better. The guitar parts last longer and won't need replacing as frequently. The more expensive the guitar, the more options you have in terms of different types of wood used and different finishes. A top-of-the-range, customized, bass guitar is not cheap. Cheap guitars are great for beginners to get started on, but don't skimp too much as this will prove to be a false economy. One way of getting a reasonable-quality bass guitar that doesn't cost the earth is to buy a second-hand or used guitar. These can be really good value. Buying decent-quality basses online is a possibility - try online auctions or websites that sell second-hand goods.
