What is an acoustic guitar?

An acoustic guitar does not does not require a separate amplifier. The structure of the body provides all the amplification it needs. In this respect an acoustic guitar is similar to a piano. Acoustic guitars can be played in band, as an accompaniment to a singer or choir, or on its own. It is an easy instrument for the guitarist to pick up and play with little setting up or preparation. The acoustic guitar is popular with travelers, festival goers and others who require a portable instrument. It can be played in a concert hall, next to a fire at a festival or on a beach in Thailand.

Guitars can be bought fairly cheaply, although of course the more you spend, the better the guitar. However it is possible to pick one up at a reasonable price and this would make more sense for beginners or those who travel around a lot. There is no point in them having a guitar that they would be scared of damaging or getting stolen. Acoustic guitars are light and easy to carry. As the sound is not amplified, they don't make enough noise to annoy the neighbors.

Different kinds of acoustic guitars

There are many different kinds of guitars and each guitar has its own distinctive sound. Some are suited to a certain style of music such as flamenco and others suit certain styles of playing. The original acoustic guitar is the classical guitar. Acoustic guitars can be strung with steel strings to give them a louder, brighter tone. Resonator guitars are designed to sound a bit louder than a standard acoustic guitar and have a blues tone. Guitarists who want a bit more volume can use an electro-acoustic guitar which can be hooked up to an amplifier in the same way as electric guitars. Electro-acoustic guitars are usually steel-string guitars modified to include a pickup which is used to pick up the vibrations of the strings and turn them into electrical signals. There are controls for volume and tone on the upper bout of the guitar. These are used to control the signal which is sent out to the main amp.

Learning to play the acoustic guitar

It is best to learn the acoustic guitar first as it is more difficult than the electric guitar. This means that once you can play the acoustic guitar, playing the electric guitar should come easily, rather like driving an automatic once you have learnt how to drive a manual vehicle. The key to learning the guitar is practice. Taking lessons is a good idea and buying guitar sheet music will help you learn new songs but practicing every day is the only way to ensure that you progress.
