Valentine's gifts and cards have been given on 14 th February for centuries. 14 th February was a romantic festival in Roman times with that day being dedicated to Juno, the Roman goddess of love, women and marriage. There are three known possibilities for the Saint Valentine who gave the festival his name, but the most popular one is the Saint Valentine who was imprisoned and fell in love with the jailer's daughter.

When he left the prison to be executed, apparently he left a note for her signed 'From Your Valentine' which was how the tradition started. Since then it has been customary for lovers to give cards and gifts to each other. Admirers may declare their feelings in an anonymous card. Or Valentine's Day may be the time when a secret admirer may make their feelings known.

Valentine's cards can be homemade or shop-bought. Homemade cards add a nice personal touch - decide whether you are going to sign it or leave it to the recipient to work out who the card is from. Writing a poem is a thoughtful gift for Valentine's Day. Buy a blank card to write it in, or make your own card and ask someone with good handwriting to write it up neatly in ink on the card. You could also draw some decorations on the card around the poem and frame it.

One very popular Valentines gift idea would be to buy your loved one sexy lingerie. This is a gift for both the giver and the receiver because the giver gets pleasure from how good their partner looks in the lingerie. Other traditional romantic gift ideas are to buy them champagne and/or chocolates. Slimmers would probably prefer flowers. Other gift ideas are candles, or bath oils. A romantic gesture would be to run your partner a bath, put in some sensual bath oils and put lit candles around the bath for you both to share. Cooking a special meal and putting rose petals on the table or across the bed is another way of celebrating Valentine's Day. A more unusual Valentines gift would be to have a love compatibility horoscope drawn up for you both, provided it showed your relationship in a positive light! Most lovers would probably cherish time and attention from their loved one so doing something special together is almost more important than the gift.
