Pearl Wedding Gifts - The 30th wedding anniversary is known as the pearl wedding anniversary and traditionally gifts of pearl are given on this anniversary. Pearls are unusual gems, grown inside living molluscs or shellfish, with a glowing smooth sheen.

This makes them different from most gemstones, as gemstones usually come out of the ground. Pearls tend to be a creamy white but they do occur in different colours, for instance pink or black depending on the type of mollusc which created them, and the environment they were created in. Pearls were believed to be dewdrops from heaven which had fallen into the ocean in Indian mythology. The Chinese believed these jewels represented immortality or life eternally renewed. These jewels represent peace, purity and perfection and are greatly valued, making them the gift of choice for a pearl wedding gift.

The mollusc creates the pearl as a response to a particle being trapped inside its shell, and the pearls are formed in layers around the particle. Pearls do not occur very often naturally but farming methods have been developed to allow pearls to be grown in larger quantities. Pearls tend to be expensive but very good, imitation pearls are available for those who can't afford the real thing. Real pearls need to be worn next to the skin regularly, otherwise they lose their lustre. Try to minimize contact with perfume and body lotions. Store them carefully, wrapped up in a cloth. Wipe pearls with cloth after wearing them to clean them before putting them away. Another form of pearls is mother-of-pearl which is flat layers of pearl.
Pearl rings, earrings, necklaces, broaches or bracelets all make good pearl wedding gifts. For an unusual alternative, consider buying a world globe with inlaid of mother-of-pearl. Furniture, boxes and other items can be bought with inlaid mother-of-pearl to make an alternative gift to pearl jewellery. Although traditionally pearl gifts are given on the 30 th wedding anniversary, the modern custom is to give diamonds. Another option to gifts of pearl would be to buy presents which are pearl-coloured, ie white. White flowers such as lilies look lovely and capture the spirit of pearl wedding anniversaries. For those that enjoy seafood maybe a champagne and oyster dinner would be the perfect celebration of their pearl wedding anniversary.
