Gift registries can be used for baby gifts , bar mitzvahs, major birthdays or other special occasions but are particularly popular for wedding gifts . Traditionally when a young couple got married, friends and family would give them presents to help them set up home together.

These would be mainly linen, pots and pans, cooking utensils, towels and other domestic items. Young girls used to collect items for their 'bottom draw' and stitch and embroider items such as table cloths for when they were wed. These days, by the time a couple get married they have usually been living together for some time and may well have their own house. Therefore they have most of what they need to get started on their married life together. Couples compile a list of what they would like to receive so wedding guests can choose appropriate gifts. Another option is to ask for gift vouchers or money towards a particular project, for instance a new bathroom or an exotic destination for the honeymoon.

Gift registries are a very good way of keeping track of wedding gifts. These days many stores offer an online gift registry service where the bride and groom can select items from the store that they would like, create a list and give their guests a copy. The lists should also be searchable by name and by date to make it easier for you to find the registered list for the couple whose wedding you are attending. There are a few main stores which offer this service, so it shouldn't be too hard to find the registry for a particular couple. Independent registry services allow you register gifts from different merchants on your gift registry. The way online registries work is that guests browse the list, find a gift that they would like to purchase for the happy couple, order it and tick it off on the registry so other guests know that someone has already purchased that gift for the bride and groom.

The list can then be used by the couple to track who gave them which gift. Guests should order gifts well in advance to ensure delivery by the wedding. To set up a gift registry you have to register online with the website holding your gift list. This means you will need to have a username and password so think about a password that is unique to you that you will easily remember.
