The Time of Giving

Christmas gifts embody the spirit of Christmas where giving is more important than receiving. Christmas gifts give people a chance to show their love and appreciation of people they are close to. Although Christmas is supposed to be a Christian celebration, it is a holiday that is so much of our culture that people from all religions and cultures tend to celebrate Christmas in some form or another. Everyone would appreciate a Christmas gift. The date on which Christmas is held was originally the Roman festival of Saturnalia and was the date when the winter solstice was celebrated in ancient Britain so the 25th of December has a tradition as a holiday for other religions.

Buying appropriate Christmas gifts can be challenge as sometimes it can be hard to think of something original and suitable to give each person. Dads are notoriously hard to buy for, usually ending up with a large collection of socks and ties after Christmas. One way families get round this is for everyone to circulate a list of presents they would like. Some people find this approach a bit clinical and think it takes the surprise element out of Christmas gifts. A gift that you have put a lot of thought into is always particularly appreciated. If you get a chance, spend some time with each gift recipient before Christmas and try and ascertain what they would like by talking to them about their interests and tastes. Children usually have a very good idea of what they would like for Christmas, but be warned: don't buy too far in advance as what they want in September may be different to what they would want in December. Young children change their mind very easily.

Shopping at Christmas time can get ridiculous with panicked shoppers rushing round crowded shops frantically grabbing at goods randomly. Oxford Street in London becomes jam-packed in the weeks coming up to Christmas. There are several ways of avoiding shopping stress. The main tip is to start your shopping early. There are people who buy their Christmas gifts in June: this may be a bit extreme but one way of picking up interesting and unusual giftsis to keep an eye out when you are on your summer holiday, particularly if you are going somewhere exotic. Consider doing your Christmas shopping online - order well in advance to make sure that goods are delivered in time for Christmas but it is much more convenient than visiting the shops. Gifts can be delivered directly to the recipient's address as well for people you won't see before Christmas.
