Having a naming ceremony is an important ritual in most cultures and traditions. Names are believed to have an important significance and it is believed that knowing someone's name gives you power over them in some cultures, for instance when Odysseus shouted out his real name to Cyclops in a fit of boastfulness as he was escaping from him having blinded him.
This gave Cyclops the power to curse Odysseus. Welcoming a new baby into the world does not necessarily have to involve a religious ceremony - non-religious events are available as well. However many parents still prefer a traditional christening ceremony with a baptism. Parents may select godparents from close friends and family. If you are asked to be a godfather or godmother, this means that you will be buying gifts for the child for many years to come so it is best to start as you mean to go on with a christening gift.
People often buy jewellery which the child can wear when it is older. Other long-term gifts include an expensive edition of the Bible, or setting up a savings account for the baby which can be used when he or she is older towards college fees or a car. Children do not pay tax so the account should be set up in the baby's name. Banks and building societies would be glad to help you with this. Birth mugs or goblets with the baby's name and date of birth make a good personalized christening gift. A photograph of the baby in a photo frame with the name and date of the birth or of the christening engraved on it makes a lovely christening gift. A fun but luxurious gift would be a silver rattle with baby's name engraved on it. Another idea would be to video the baby from as soon as you get a chance, video the christening and then give that as a christening present for the parents to add to as the child is growing up for an enduring record of the childhood years. A similar christening gift if you don't own a camcorder would be to buy a nice photo album and put in a few early photos of the baby and the parents and then they can use the album to put the christening photos in.
