Most gold engagement and wedding rings are made with 18 karat gold which is made up of three parts gold to one part alloy (other metals such as silver, copper, zinc and nickel). It may surprise you to learn that pure gold, classified as 24 karat gold, is actually too soft for use in most jewellery.
The desired colour of the gold will determine which alloy is used. Yellow gold is made by adding silver and some copper to the pure gold. Pink gold, however, is made by adding more copper than silver.
Gold will not tarnish, corrode or rust. It will need repairing more frequently than platinum, but is much more malleable and therefore fairly easy and inexpensive to look after.
