COLOUR
Diamonds occur naturally in a variety of colours, including blues, pinks, greens, oranges and very rarely reds, but yellow and brown are the most common. The colour of a diamond is graded alphabetically from D to Z, D being the whitest, Z the most yellow. The letters A, B and C were kept back by the GIA (Gemmological Institute of America) in case a whiter diamond is yet to be found. Below is a summary of the GIA's colour grading scale.
Grade : Colour
D - F : Colourless
G - J : Near colourless
K - L : Faint yellow
N - R : Very light yellow
S - Z : Light yellow
The colour of a diamond can greatly affect its price - the whiter and more colourless the diamond, the greater its rarity and value - so it is an important factor to consider. M ost diamonds do contain a certain amount of yellow, though this may not necessarily be obvious to the naked eye.
