CLARITY
Clarity refers to the amount of specks or 'inclusions' inside the diamond. The fewer inclusions there are, the purer and more valuable the diamond. Flawless diamonds are very rare and almost all diamonds contain some impurities, either internally or on the surface of the stone.
A diamond does not have to be flawless to be beautiful and its inclusions can actually be used to your advantage because they are a diamond's fingerprint and will distinguish it from any other. Comparing your stone with the plot provided on the diamond certificate will reassure you that the diamond you are paying for is the diamond you take home.
Nevertheless too many inclusions will affect the brilliance of a diamond as they influence how light travels through the stone, and therefore how much it sparkles. The GIA's clarity scale has become the international standard of laboratory grading. Be aware that commercial grading is not usually quite so strict so be cautious of jewellers who use their own system.
The table below should help you understand the GIA's grading scale:
| GIA grading | Description | What this means to you |
| IF or Loupe Clean | Internally flawless | No inclusions |
| VVS1 | Very, very small inclusions | No visible inclusions to the naked eye, barely visible under 10X magnification |
| VVS2 | Very, very small inclusions | No visible inclusions to the naked eye, barely visible under 10X magnification |
| VS1 | Very small inclusions | No visible inclusions to the naked eye, but visible under 10X magnification |
| VS2 | Very small inclusions | No visible inclusions to the naked eye, but visible under 10X magnification |
| SI1 | Small inclusions | No visible inclusions to the naked eye, but easily visible under 10X magnification |
| SI2 | Small inclusions | No visible inclusions to the naked eye, but easily visible under 10X magnification |
| I1 | Included | Barely visible inclusions to the naked eye |
| I2 | Included | Barely visible inclusions to the naked eye |
| I3 | Included | Very easily visible inclusions to the naked eye |
