When most people think of diamonds they think of a clear colourless gem. However, diamonds are found in an array of colours including yellow, pink, blue and even black. If you intend to buy natural (rather than a cultured) yellow diamonds, make sure that your gem dealer provides you with the correct certification. Shades of yellow vary greatly and jewellers often get quite lyrical in their descriptions, so expect anything from a canary yellow diamond to marmalade or champagne. The Gemological Institute of America classifies diamond color using an alphabetical scale ranging from D (colorless) to Z (deep yellow). As a rule of thumb when it comes to pricing: the deeper the color yellow, the more the stone is worth.
