Today it's impossible to imagine a wedding ceremony without exchanging bands. The wedding band is the ultimate sign of loving commitment between a couple and the most cherished piece of jewellery anyone is likely to own. The band has no beginning and no end, which makes it the perfect symbol of enduring union, and diamonds add that extra special sparkle.

Wedding bands were first worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was believed that a 'love vein' ran straight form the heart to the finger. Unfortunately the vena amoris didn't make it into any biology text books, but the tradition remains.

Because the fourth finger is used for both engagement and wedding rings, it's important to differentiate between the two - especially if both are fashioned with diamonds. One way is for brides to switch the engagement ring to the right hand on the wedding day, another is to choose a distinctive band, which nevertheless compliments the existing ring (this combination of band and ring is often referred to as a bridal set).

It's difficult to historically pinpoint when the tradition of wearing wedding bands began, but friendship rings are mentioned in Genesis, and by 860 AD pope Nicholas I had dictated that the groom should give his bride a gold ring as a sign of financial commitment. There is another, less romantic, school of thought that traces the first wedding bands to a much earlier date; when primeval man used woven cord to bind the hands of his betrothed (a piece of which was later symbolically worn on the finger).

The tradition of men wearing wedding bands is a much more modern phenomenon and was thought to have begun in World War II. Soldiers conscripted to serve in Europe began wearing wedding bands to remind them of their wives back home and the practice caught on. A more recent trend is for husband and wife to wear matching wedding bands.
