Today the Hope Diamond necklace belongs to America's Smithsonian Institution, where it can be viewed surrounded by 16 white diamonds and hung on a chain necklace fashioned out of a further 45 white diamonds.

Diamond necklaces have a wealth of history to reflect on; which means that there is a staggering array of designs to choose from. Deciding how much you are able to spend is the easy bit, you'll then have to think hard about style, setting (white gold and platinum are currently in vogue) and then the rocks themselves.
