Whilst it is true that their diet should largely be based around starchy carbohydrates like pasta, bread, fruit and vegetables, no food is banned. In other words, diabetics can enjoy so-called 'normal' chocolate, as long as it is in moderation and if possible, at the end of a meal.

The organization says that products labelled with the 'diabetic' tag are often much more expensive than their conventional equivalent, and may make people with diabetes feel obliged to buy them even though they rarely have any real benefit in terms of blood glucose control. In fact, some varieties of chocolate designed by the chocolate industry specifically for diabetics will actually have more calories and fat in it than regular chocolate, and may negatively affect blood sugar levels.

Another problem related to diabetic chocolate is that it contains fructose or other sweetening agents that can have a laxative effect.

So, if you are buying someone who suffers from diabetes a box of chocolates or an Easter egg, don't pay extra for diabetic chocolate. Just remember that caution, not abstinence, is the key. Of course it is important for diabetics to eat a low-fat, low-sugar diet most of the time, but a little chocolate on a special occasion will not affect their long-term blood glucose management. It is also much nicer for a child with diabetes to have the same type of treat as those around them so that they do not feel excluded from the fun, but remember to make sure they eat the chocolate gradually and not all at once.
