Sterling silver is made up of a combination of 92.5% silver mixed with copper and other elements which make it stronger for making jewelry. But it’s due to this use of copper that leads to the metal going black over time after it reacts with things such as air, salt water, sweat and other elements of everyday lift.

Ways to clean sterling silver charms

There are a number of different ways to clean silver. The first step should be cleaning it with a special jewelry polishing cloth. These are available at all jewelers and also department stores.

If this doesn’t work, then try washing the charms in a mix of hot water and very diluted dishwashing liquid, and after drying them thoroughly with a soft cloth, then try again with the cloth. Another option is to use a soft toothbrush in the hard to get to places – just make sure not to push too hard as it can scratch and damage the piece.

As a last resort, use a jewelry dip – but be careful not to leave each piece in for more than a few seconds at a time, as the dip can be very harsh on the metal. If you have dipped it once, but find the piece still isn’t clean, be careful if you want to re-dip it. Don’t be tempted to leave it in there for longer the second time – it is better to do several short dips than a longer one, as the damage can be irreversible if you dip for too long.
