While charms date back as far as Neolithic times, actual charm bracelets have been documented from Egyptian times.

People of this time used to adorn their bodies with charm necklaces and bracelets not only as a status symbol during life, but also supposedly to alert the gods of their status in the afterlife.

Through the ages, charms have played a part in many cultures, such as the Christians in the Roman Empire using them for identity purposes in banned worship activities, and also the Middle Ages where they were used to protect warriors in battle, and also for representation of family and social standing.

Charms: a modern day fashion accessory

The purpose of charm bracelets shifted to being one of fashion and decoration during the reign of Queen Victoria, but it was during World War II that the trend of charm collecting really took off. Soldiers away from home would pick up charms from the locals to give to their girlfriends and wives back home.

In the decades following, charms remained popular, and came in many different forms. For example, in the 1940s, gumball charms were all the rage. Aimed at children, these fun charms were made of plastic and came out of gumball machines. The 1950s saw the charms reaching their height of popularity, with it being a common part of most women’s lives. They were given during a young woman’s teen years, and she would add charms to it to mark milestones in her lifetime.

From the 1970s their popularity died, but come the 1990s, vintage bracelets started reappearing for sale, and charm bracelets went through a renaissance.

Nowadays, there are a number of different types of charm bracelets available on the market (including the trendy new unisex Italian charm bracelets), which are made from a range of metals and materials, such as gold, silver, pewter and beads.

The trend and tradition of charms continues to grow and remain popular in the modern world, and shows no sign of slowing down.
