French champagnes have retained their market dominance despite challenges from both new and old world wineries. There are plenty of producers to choose from but a few great houses have consistently stood out from the pack. Here’s our top ones:
J.Bollinger
Founded in 1828 by Jacques Bollinger, a native of Württemberg, and Paul Renaudin, a local champenois (who only remained for a short while) this is one of the great names in Champagne. Jacques made several shrewd land purchases early on and his descendants continued this policy; today the firm’s vineyards supply 70% of their needs. Grape quality is all-important and most of their champagnes are classified as premier or grand cru.

Charles Heidsieck
Founded in 1851 by Charles-Camille Heidsieck (aka ‘Champagne Charlie’) the firm has enjoyed growing success since it was bought out by Remy-Cointreau (the Cognac based group) in 1976. The firm has acquired vineyards of its own in the best areas and so has been able to secure the best grapes for its blends. This is definitely one to watch.

Krug
Krug has always stood for uncompromising quality since its foundation in 1843. Today it is best known for its Grande Cuvée, first launched in 1979. Although recently taken over by the luxury LVMH (Moët Hennessy - Louis Vuitton) Group it retains its family-run feel.

Louis Roederer
Louis Roederer hit the big time in 1876 with their Cristal Cuvee and by 1909 were the official champagne suppliers to the Tsars. Their global popularity survived revolution, prohibition and war and today Cristal remains the drink of choice for both well established and wannabee stars. It remains independent and retains traditional production methods.

Moët & Chandon
Founded in 1743 Moët & Chandon remains one of the dominant champagnes houses in the region and has the sort of brand-name associations that many companies can only dream of. Being best mates with Napoleon certainly helped Jean-Remy Moët establish himself in the business. The first Dom Perignon prestige cuvées were released in 1936 but most remarkable for many is the consistent high quality of their basic Brut Imperial.
