One of the archetypical symbols of an extravagant lifestyle is the champagne fountain. These were all the rage back in 1920’s America and we’ve all seen the photos of flappers dancing about in front of champagne fountains in New York nightclubs.
Nowadays the craze for constructing champagne fountains has subsided but nonetheless they are still popular. In fact it was only recently that the largest champagne fountain ever was created by Luke Broos, director of Maison Luuk-Chalet Fontaine, In December 1999 he managed to construct a 56 storey champagne fountain at the Steigenberger Kurhaus Hotel in the Netherlands. It was made from 30,856 traditional long-stemmed champagne flutes and took him only two days to build. Whilst no one was encouraged to drink from this one most of the time the idea was to try and quaff as many as possible.
More typical is the sort of small-scale champagne fountain poured to celebrate a special occasion in a swish restaurant. Charles Bourdin of the Lanesborough hotel constructed a modest 240-glass fountain in April 2000 to celebrate the champagne house Mumm’s status as official champagne for the Greenwich Meridian. This is a far cry from the heady days in boom time America when huge champagne fountains were the order of the day in any self-respecting speakeasy.
The 21st century equivalent of these follies is very different. Modern champagne fountains are garish contraptions that are often used at weddings and receptions to add a touch of ‘class’ to such occasions. You pour the champagne into the top of the fountain and it’s recycled and kept cool as it splashes down the different levels until someone decides to stick a glass under one of the spigots and get a refill. They’re more popular in the USA than in the United Kingdom and one could say that they’re an ‘acquired’ taste. Still if you want to bring a touch of Sopranos style vulgarity to that special day than go ahead and set one up.
