Feed your passion on eBay.co.uk.Crystal champagne glasses are expensive but fans of bubbly believe that the extra cost is well worth it. Connoisseurs believe that the taste difference is quite noticeable and argue that if you’re going to pay lots of money on a decent bottle of champagne then you should invest in appropriate glasses to match. The most popular design for crystal champagne glasses is the flute. The elegant design of the flute ensures the champagne retains both its fizz and chill for longer than other glass designs.
Why is crystal superior to normal glass? Is it worth investing in some even if you class yourself as a ‘casual’ champagne consumer? The popularity of crystal glass has grown over the last four hundred years and modern manafacturing processes have meant that it has become cheaper and therefore more popular. It’s still a pricey option but is well-worth considering investing in for special occasions as it will undoubtedly enhance the pleasure of drinking champagne.
Crystal glass was introduced to Europe (and the world) by Venetian craftsmen in the sixteenth century. The popularity of glass blowing and manufacture in the city ensured that Venetian glassmakers were at the forefront of the industry. It became poplar in Britain and was further refined by George Ravenscroft in 1675 when he added lead oxide to Venetian crystal glass.
The resulting lead crystal glass was softer and easy to decorate by grinding, cutting and engraving than Venetian crystal glass. It also had a high refractive index, which meant that it sparkled and caught the light in a beguiling way. Unsurprisingly it was popular with the aristocracy who fashioned all sorts of glassware out of it. It was particularly suited to chandeliers and crystal designs became ever more elaborate and expensive.
Its qualities also made it a popular choice for making glasses out of and as champagne grew in popularity it became a perfect partnership. Both were expensive, refined and luxurious and drinking champagne out of anything less than top-notch crystal was a definite no-no. As tastes became more democratic and the ‘man in the street’ began enjoying champagne then crystal was no longer obligatory. It will however enhance the experience and if you’re going to buy a pricey bottle it’s well worth investing in some decent glasses.
