Eulogised by rappers ‘kris’ has entered the lexicon of the street as a byword for ‘bling’ but its origins are slightly more upmarket. Originally created for the Tsars it was first sipped by Alexander II in 1876. At the time the Cristal Cuvee blend was supposed to be the best champagne money could buy. Today it remains recognisable to the ‘man in the street’ as an essential accessory to wealth and privilege.

Cristal Champagne - the brainchild of Louis Roederer

Louis Roederer was head of the champagne house that takes his name from 1832 to 1870. During his time at the helm the house became the leading champagne supplier in the world and managed to shift over two and a half million bottles with Russia becoming the main market. Louis Roederer II created the Cristal Cuvee after hearing that Alexander II was dissatisfied by the fact that the champagne served at his table was indistinguishable from that of the other nobles in Russia.

Louis Roederer II also designed a special bottle bearing the imperial coat of arms to serve his new prestige vintage in. Alexander II was suitably impressed and Cristal became the choice of drink at the Russian court. In 1909 Alexander’s successor Nicholas II nominated Louis Roederer to be the official champagne supplier to the Imperial Court and the house hit the big time. Cristal was also a big seller in the States, as it became a byword for excellence across the globe.

Unfortunately the Russian Revolution signalled time at the bar and whilst the Bolsheviks may have inherited a fondness for autocracy from the Tsars they didn’t share their taste for champagne. Sales plummeted in Russia and the house was further hammered by Prohibition in America. Able management by family successors ensured that the house weathered difficult times and post-war prosperity allowed it to establish its former pre-eminence.

Nowadays Cristal is made much as it was over a century ago and traditional methods are still employed to ensure that it remains a prestige vintage. It’s a blend of pinot noir and chardonnay grapes aged for over five years and still turned by hand in the cellars on the estate.
