Whilst champagne cocktails are a popular way of adding a bit of zest to a special celebration it must be admitted that champagne punches are not always seen in the same light. Champagne punch does seem a bit of a waste, drowning such an elegant wine in a variety of fruit juices, and the fact that they are so sweet also undermines their crisp bite. However they are fun to make and are a good way of livening up a party. The best advice would be not to buy anything particularly expensive (in fact I would stick to Cava or some sparkling Chardonnay). Here are some of the more popular ones:

New Years Eve champagne punch

For a bit of fun you could mix up the following brew:

1. Half a cup of orange sherbet
2. Four cups of orange juice
3. Two litres of chilled ginger ale
4. Two bottles of champagne

Make sure everything is nice and cold before preparation. Place the block of sherbet in the centre of the punch bowl and pour the orange juice over the top. Next add the ginger ale and pour the champagne in next. Stir until foaming and then serve.

Cranberry kick

This one’s got plenty of vitamin C and a pleasant reddish tinge.

1. Six cups of cranberry juice
2. Two cups of freshly squeezed orange juice
3. Two bottles of champagne
4. One bottle of Club Soda

Combine all the ingredients in a punch bowl (except champagne) and chill. Add the fizz and serve immediately.

Brandy nip

This one’s a bit classier than the others. Personally I tend to leave out the water (why dilute the sparkling stuff?)

1. Two bottles of champagne
2. One cup of Cointreau
3. One cup of brandy
4. One bottle of chilled carbonated water

Mix in punch bowl and serve quickly. Can be a bit strong if you get carried away with the spirits.

Strawberry Shampoo

This is really quite delicious. It’s perfect for a summer day.

1. Two ten-ounce packages of thawed frozen sweetened strawberries
2. Two bottles of rosé wine
3. One and a half cups of fresh lemon juice
4. Gomme syrup
5. Three bottles of champagne

Chill all ingredients and then purée the strawberries in a blender. Sweeten the lemon juice with some gomme and then pour into punch bowl. Add strawberries and wine. Add the champagne just before serving.

Jolly green giant

This one’s very refreshing on a hot day and it’s simplicity itself to make.

1. Three watermelons
2. Gomme syrup
3. Three bottles of champagne

Purée the watermelon and gomme syrup together in a blender. Chill and then slowly add champagne.
