Champagne bottles range from the sublime to the ridiculous and you will be amazed at the array out there. Perrier-Jouët’s fantastic art noveau bottles are a good example of the champagne bottle at its most sophisticated. The fact that Perrier-Jouët was founded by a couple who fell in love with the vineyards and then each other adds an extra element of passion to the drinking experience and their champagne bottles reflect the era of the belle epoche that made them so popular.
On the other hand you have plenty of ‘comedy’ magnums handed out on retirements and 21st birthday parties that range in size and can sometimes hold up to a dozen litres of champagne. These are popular at parties but for home consumption are usually too large and cumbersome to store. There are plenty of good-looking champagne bottles out there and all of the big names make an effort when packaging their prestige vintages.
Possibly the most bizarre thing about champagne bottles are the biblical sounding titles given to the different sizes. A three-litre bottle is called a Jeroboam whilst a six-litre bottle is known as a Mathusalem. If you want nine litres then demand a Salmanazar and a 12-litre bottle is described as a Balthazar. If you really want to push the boat out then ask for a Nebuchedezzar; this is 15 litres of champagne. If you find this rather bewildering then don’t worry. As long as you stick to one and a half litres and under you’ll be fine; you can get a quarter, half-bottle or a magnum.
Champagne bottles differ from other wine bottles in that they are thicker and heavier. In fact it was only with developments in glass making and the ability to make such thick glass that the proper processing of champagne was possible. In the Middle Ages craftsmen were not able to make glass bottles that would withstand the effervescence of the fermentation process without breaking. It was only in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that proper bubbly was able to brew in glasses that would hold it.
These developments finally ensured that the fermentation process could be carried through to its conclusion and that the sparkling wines of the region became celebrated across the globe.
