Ballooning has come a long way since a duck, a rooster and a sheep were carried aloft in the first ‘manned’ flight in 1783. Nowadays it’s possible to circumnavigate the globe and even the most pedestrian of balloon flights can see you reaching heights that the ducks of yesteryear only dreamt of. Ballooning’s popularity has ‘rocketed’ in the last few years and plenty of people are choosing to celebrate special occasions with a champagne balloon flight. What better way to mark an important milestone than hundreds of feet high sipping a glass of bubbly. It’s Ab Fab meets Jules Verne and satisfies both the ardent adventurer and chic sophisticate that lurk within us all.
To tell you the truth most balloon flights will throw in a bottle of sparkling as part of the trip. It’s seen of as the perfect accompaniment to the experience and the whole package should set you back about £100 per person. It’s important to be aware of the fact that the whole enterprise is extremely reliant on decent weather so if it’s raining or too windy you’ll have to re-book. If you’re bringing kids along make sure they’re tall enough or they won’t be seeing anything other than the basket (ring the company and find out height requirements).
Most balloon flights tend to set off early as the winds tend to be calmer and seeing the sunrise is, for many people, the highlight of the trip. You’ll be in the air for about an hour and will be picked up on landing and shuttled back to the starting point. It’s not a hazardous sport although the landing can be a little bumpy on occasion. You should get a little certificate as a memento of your trip. Britain (despite its variable weather) has some great ballooning trips on offer.
In the south the university cities of Oxford and Cambridge are obvious draw cards and floating over the ‘dreaming spires’ in either location should feel suitably Brideshead Revisited. For more spectacular scenery you should head north and sample the delights of the Lake District or Scotland from on high. Any stretch of rugged coastline should be suitable for a spot of aerial jiggery-pokery but Cornwall and Dorset remain firm favourites. London is also great from the air; you can finally see how it all fits together after years of emerging from subturranaen underground stations.
