Seek more "work at home" opportunities online - UK - USA
Modern internet technology has made it possible for millions of people to work at home online and this has become the new way to telecommute. Telecommuting is a term used to broadly describe any employee that spends any amount of time working away from the office or normal place of work. Telework is another term, more commonly used in Europe, to describe the same work situation.
Modern day telecommuting usually translates into doing work from home online because most people use the Internet to keep in touch with their employers and colleagues. However, it is possible to work at home with just the telephone to connect you to your employer. Some companies allow certain employees to work from home for a day or two in order to complete a project. For example, a writer may be allowed a couple of days to work on a project at home.
Most people who work at home online only do so one or two days a week. However, there are many organizations that have telecommuting programs that mean some employees rarely have to go in to the office. An increasing number of companies have begun recognizing the benefits of telecommuting including decreased employee related costs, a reduced number of absentees due to strikes and weather and increased opportunities for internationalization. Having employees who work from home online also means a company can relocate without having to lose their most valued recruits.
Governments and environmental agencies try to encourage telecommuting because it reduces rush-hour traffic and, as a result, rush-hour congestion and pollution. Telecommuting is also an ideal option for mothers, the handicapped or those living in isolated areas.
One of the biggest disadvantages is a reduced amount of social contact which can lead to a feeling of isolation. While office politics can get be a real nuisance at times, the office environment can also have a positive effect on employees and their work. Those who work at home online face the possibility of longer hours, home distractions and the potential effects on family life. Working from home also means less IT support.
Attempting to convince your boss of allowing you to work from home online is no easy task and there is no guarantee of success. You can increase your chances by having a plan and a written proposal. Never broach the subject spontaneously, especially if you haven't had a chance to think it through yourself. It will inevitably lead to a 'no'.
Set an appointment with your boss and treat as you would treat a job interview. Prepare a written proposal outlining the advantages of telecommuting for the company and address all major concerns and issues your boss may have. This doesn't guarantee a 'yes' but it will certainly go a long to encouraging your boss to think about it. At the very least it would reflect well on you as an employee.
