Many people choose to do home work because they like the idea of being their own boss. The problem is most people don't realize just how difficult it is. As the boss you have to manage the company, overseeing everything that's going on. You also have a number of employee roles including being the accountant, the secretary and the manager. This adds up to a lot of work and with no one else there to motivate you or discipline you for slacking off, it is difficult to keep up the good work.
Self-discipline and self-motivation are two major issues when working at home on your own. The first thing you need to do is to identify your strengths and your weaknesses within the context of your business. The best way to do this is to make a list of the basic functions you will need to undertake when you start your new home work business. Go through the list and decide which you believe you are good at and those you are less confident with. So, for example you might be very good at problem solving and organization but you may not be as good at marketing.
Once you have done this you need to start building on your strengths and improving or finding an effective way to working around your weaknesses. Hopefully the core function of the company, the one which is central to your business, is one you are good at and enjoy. It is no good starting home work business doing something you dislike. For example, don't start a bookkeeping service if you dislike working with numbers.
It is a good idea to try and improve on your weaknesses by doing courses, reading books or even seeking help and advice from professionals. There is no point sticking your head in the sand and ignoring it until becomes a problem; which of course it will. The only way to perfect the dreaded business functions is to put them into practice. The problem with this is that it takes a lot of work to manage both yourself and your business.
Self-motivation is a personal affair and you'll have to try and figure out how best to motivate yourself. Some people find that the pressure of a deadline helps them get things done whereas others may simply offer themselves a reward or treat for achieving their goals. Developing a method that encourages you to do what needs to be done is a vital part of any type of home work.
