You may be required to pay a joining fee and pay for other sales materials. The advantage to working for larger companies is that you are likely to be trained as a company representative. If a company is selling the job opportunity as the product rather than a real product then it is almost definitely a scam. This is because it would simply be paying people for referring others to the program rather than paying people to sell a product or service. This is illegal.
