A wedding tiara conjures up images of glamour and royalty — exactly the way a blushing bride wants to feel on her wedding day. Tiaras are now the most common choice of head attire for UK brides, and can be worn with our without a veil.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to buy a tiara without trying it on first - preferably with your wedding dress, hairstyle for the big day, and veil. Tiaras tend to look very different on the shelf to how they look on your head, and the best way of avoiding a mistake is to try plenty of different styles. It’s very common for a bride to find that a tiara she would not have looked at twice suddenly looks spectacular together with the whole ensemble.
Although the traditional form of tiara was a high crown, there are now considerable varieties, which include anything from conical tiaras to subtle headband styles. The kinds of tiara you should consider will depend not only on your personal taste, but the way you intend to wear your hair on your wedding day. The fashion for poker-straight silky hair can limit the size of tiara you can choose. No amount of hair-grips are able to stop it sliding off your head — particularly with the added weight of a veil. Short hair may look unbalanced if a tall tiara is worn, whereas large waves would swamp a small tiara, so the opposite is also true. As a general rule, the larger your hairstyle, the larger the tiara can be. Remember that a tiara should be worn like a crown at the front of your head, rather than at the back like a headband.
The colour of the wedding tiara does not always need consideration. If you are a redhead, gold or copper can look sensational, but otherwise most hair shades from black to blonde can suit gold or silver. Rather than categorise tiaras by the metal, most tiara designers will divide them by their decoration — plain, pearl or crystal. You can choose to match the style to that of your wedding gown, particularly to accentuate crystal or pearl detailing on the dress or veil. However, if you have a simple wedding dress, the tiara could provide an element of sparkle and act as a focal point. A great idea is to incorporate your birthstone — or the stone that corresponds to the month of your wedding — into your tiara for a unique and personal touch.
Tiaras are often used as the ‘something borrowed’ component — friends and family may be only too happy to see their tiara wing its way down the aisle again. Even types which were worn a number of years ago are easy to update with new hairstyles or modern veils.
