Shop online for baby clothes - UK - USA
Tiny little dresses, incy wincy shoes, minute babygros - those UK baby clothes stores will grab your attention and your heart from the moment you find out you're pregnant. However strong the temptation to splash out on baby clothes, it's best to avoid shopping for anything until later in your pregnancy when you have a better idea of what size your baby will be.
Baby clothes are labelled according to age 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months and so on. Babies with large birth weights may never fit into the newborn clothes so get as much information from your doctor about the baby before you head off shopping. Very small babies, or premature babies, may need a special range of clothes in sizes smaller than the newborn ranges.
Babies generally dislike being dressed and undressed so buy clothes that are easy to take off and put on. All-in-one suits, such as babygros, are the most practical wear for new babies. The poppers that run all along the legs and up the front make nappy changing simple for you and less upsetting for the baby. Buy them with enough room in the legs for some growth.
It's a good idea to avoid anything at the baby clothes stores that needs hand washing or ironing - you simply won't have the time for this. So avoid those cute lambswool cardis and the frilly starched dresses. Also look out for and avoid any raised seams and scratchy labels. The best fibres for your baby to wear are natural ones, as these minimize sweating, itching and irritation. Pure cotton clothing and bedding are the best bet.
You'll probably be given lots of baby clothes as gifts once the baby is born but you're going to need to bring a few items to the hospital when you go into labor - and have the essentials at home when you get out. Once you've got an idea from your doctor what the birth weight of your child will be you'll need to head for the baby clothes stores.
It's a good idea to buy four to six babygros to begin with. If you don't know the gender of the child opt for neutral colors. You should also get two sleep suits, a set of cotton vests, a few cardigans and a lightweight hat. Other newborn essentials include bibs, socks and if summer, a sunhat with a wide brim. Buy a few fitted sheets for the crib and some lightweight blankets. As soon as you've got your baby home and fall into a routine you'll have a much better idea of what and how many changes of clothes he or she will need, and a more objective idea of what to look for at the baby clothes stores.
