Online banking services in the UK have come leaps and bounds since they were first introduced a few years ago. Whether for business or personal purposes, it is now quick and straightforward to check your balance, make a transfer, and pay a bill all without leaving your house or picking up the phone. And you can do it whenever you like, 24 hours a day, and from anywhere in the world.
There are two different types of online banking - accessing the account that you have with your regular high-street bank online, or banking with a company that is almost entirely accessed via the web. The latter type is known as an Internet Bank, and you can read more about these on our Internet Banking page.
Regular banks or building societies who offer an online facility are often referred to as 'clicks and mortar' operations. As well as accessing your account details on a computer, some banks offer facilities through a digital TV connection. A new technology known as wireless application protocol (WAP) is also being developed where users will have the option of using a mobile phone to manage their account.
How do I arrange online banking?
If you already have a bank account, it is relatively straightforward to arrange online access, provided of course that your bank has an online facility, and also that you have access to the Internet. All banks have slightly different systems, however all will require you to fill in and sign an application form to identify yourself. This form cannot be completed online, because the bank will need a hardcopy of your signature. If accepted, a pass code or password will be sent out to you, in much the same way as pin codes for bank and credit cards are distributed to customers.
If you do not already have an account, you'll need to go through the regular application process. This procedure involves you completing the required forms, where you will be required to give a range of information from your date of birth to employment details, and also proof of your identity, usually using a driver's licence, passport and/or household utility bills.
