Maternity Trousers : getting the right styles

For work, going out on the town or just relaxing at home you'll find it difficult to get through your pregnancy without a pair of maternity trousers. Many mothers-to-be swear by wearing their husband's trousers or yoga trousers throughout their pregnancy but between morning sickness, tiredness and feeling left out of the social scene, feeling good about how you look may just be the boost you need.

Maternity trousers have the benefit of being cut to fit the pregnant body: they'll accommodate your bulging belly but they'll still look good on your rear end and show off your legs rather than swathing them in folds of surplus fabric. And unless your partner is a lot larger than you there's no way you'll fit into his trousers by the end of your pregnancy.

Fitted clothes are the most flattering items to wear during pregnancy and a well cut pair of maternity trousers can make you look like a million dollars. There are styles, shapes and sizes to fit every body, from tall maternity trousers to petite sizes, classic cut work wear, maternity scrubs, yoga trousers and maternity jeans. Your style is a personal choice but it's generally a good idea to stick with designs that suited you before you became pregnant. Also bear in mind that even if you're a dedicated fan of high heels, your swollen feet might not fit into your favorite boots, so choose a style that isn't too long and can be worn with flats too.

Finding a style that suits you - long, tall, petite or plus size

Maternity trousers are designed as either over-the-bump styles, with a wide expandable waistband that covers your bump or low-cut under the-bump styles that have an elastic waistband or elastic side panels. Casual trousers with drawstrings are also a good option as they can expand as you do, though they're not always flattering in the earlier months as the extra material gathers round your waist. A good compromise is maternity trousers that have an elastic waistband at the back and a drawstring at the front.

For the sleekest look, go for maternity trousers with adjustable buttons or Velcro fastenings on the side or elastic waistbands with side zips. These give a smooth contour and look great with a fitted maternity shirt. If you're petite look for trousers with long legs as these give the impression that you're tall and balance out your bump. Avoid any designs with seams along the front of the trousers - as the trousers get tighter the seam will press uncomfortably against your belly.

Fashionable maternity clothing can be hard to find but the real trick is combining basics such a great pair of maternity trousers with a simple shirt or jacket. No one expects pregnant women to look stylish, so when you do you'll seem even more glamorous and alluring.
