Baring your body to the world when you least look like you have a model figure may fill you with dread but invest in some designer maternity swimwear and it may not seem half the challenge. Swimming is one of the safest and most effective forms of exercise during pregnancy and the choice of maternity swimsuits has improved greatly in the last few years. Everything from traditional black one pieces to racy bikinis in daring colours and funky nursing bikinis can now be found.
When buying maternity swimwear think about how comfortable you're going to feel wearing it: are you happy showing off your bulging belly or do you want to keep it under cover? This should determine whether you opt for a one piece, a bikini or tankini.
Choosing a style and cut for bikinis and one pieces
Leg cut can also make a big difference to maternity bathing suits, and although low cut legs may look less flattering they're generally more comfortable to wear. You'll also need to consider how much coverage you've got on your rear end. As your hips widen during pregnancy a bikini bottom without much fabric will start to ride up. Opting for a design with a flowing mini skirt over the briefs can be a good compromise for the self conscious and quite flattering if you've got wide hips.
Later in your pregnancy the designer swimsuits from Japanese Weekend can be a great idea. Their patented designs have a flip-up band around the bikini briefs for extra abdominal support. Alternatively the band can be flipped down for extra back support.
On top always go for an option with wide straps as they distribute the weight more evenly and place less strain on the shoulders. Spaghetti straps can dig into the skin and be uncomfortable to wear. Also consider the level of support offered by the bathing suit. A soft cup top may look good but a shelf bra, a wide band of elastic below the bust, gives more support. Halter tops and designs with t-backs or racer backs also give better support to heavy breasts.
The one area that you don't gain weight and won't need to cover up during pregnancy is your back. Maternity swimwear with low cut backs can make you feel more elegant without having to feel self conscious about your body. Another great option is contemporary tops with a flowing skirt below the bust like a baby doll. These give you the option of tanning your mid rift while lying down but covering it up when walking about.
Most maternity swimsuits come in cotton or nylon with varying degrees of spandex for expandability. The choice of fabric is really up to you but although cotton can be softer it doesn't hold its colour well. Nylon survives better especially if you're swimming in pools. To help preserve your suit always rinse it well after swimming as the chlorine breaks down the fabric quickly.
