A maternity pillow supports your growing belly and your lower back in the later stages when the sheer weight of your belly can cause lots of discomfort. Finding a comfortable sleeping position can be particularly difficult and a maternity pillow can both make sleep easier and alleviate back pain.
Tossing and turning attempting to find a comfortable sleeping position for your outsized body is a common problem for heavily pregnant women. Lying on your back can be awkward with a large bump and lying on your side makes the weight pull down uncomfortably. Conventional pillows only deal with the problem in a very basic way and maternity pillows can be a real godsend in the third trimester of pregnancy. By ensuring a comfortable sleeping position despite a massive belly and relieving the strain on the lower back a pregnancy pillow can ensure a good night's sleep and a pain-free back.
Maternity pillow designs for body support
Maternity pillows come in two main designs. One is loosely shaped like a boomerang: one end supports your head, the center curls under your ever-expanding bump and the other end supports the feet. The second style of pregnancy pillow is made up of two support pillows joined by an adjustable Velcro pad. The width between the pillows can be adjusted to suit your body and you then nestle yourself between the two cushions while one supports your back and the other your belly. This pillow is particularly good for sleeping on your side.
Maternity pillows also come in useful after the birth when they can be used to support the weight of the baby while breastfeeding. This prevents sore arms and shoulders and helps both mother and baby to relax. They're also perfect for bottle feeding and can ease Dad into the swing of things and encourage him to keep helping out with feeds. Nursing pillows come in a variety of sizes and shapes and it's a good idea to test out a few in a store to see which design you think would work best for you.
Pregnancy pillows come in a variety of fabrics and fillings but a 100 percent natural cotton cover and a hypo allergenic, high-loft, high-yield polyfill combination is usually a good option as it will be machine washable and yet retain its shape and bounce. Expect to pay between $40 and $85 for a good model.
