Maternity photography : capturing the moment
Signing yourself up for a maternity photography session can be a big step. You're likely to be asked to expose more skin than ever before for a camera - right when you least look like you've got a model figure. Of course, the pose and the clothes - or lack of them - is up to you, but ever since a very pregnant, and very naked, Demi Moore adorned the cover of Vanity Fair a dozen years ago, fine art maternity photography has been done in the nude.
You can choose to go for the fine art look with streaming light, subtly placed drapes of cloth and expensive floral arrangements or opt to leave your clothes on and go for a more family oriented picture, and include your partner in the maternity portrait. Maternity photos can capture the very special feelings between you at this special time in your life and can be a fantastic precursor to a newborn baby shot.
Maternity photography can make any mother-to-be feel beautiful about who they are and how they look. And if you've found it difficult to get pregnant or think you might only do it once, maternity portraits are a reminder of how special pregnancy is and a celebration of a unique time in your life.
Arranging the maternity photography shoot
It's best to schedule your photo session for about six to ten weeks before your due date. At this point you'll have a proper photogenic bump and yet still have the energy to pose for several hours. When choosing a photographer don't just look at their portfolio or prices, speak to them in person and see if you feel comfortable with them. If you're ill at ease when your photos are taken it'll shown in the prints.
Most maternity photographers are women but even so if you've opted for a nude portrait you're going to have to take your clothes off in front of a stranger and you need to know you're comfortable with them. It's worth finding a photographer who will be willing to sit down and talk to you before the session; someone who will take the time to try and get to know you a little before capturing the moment, someone who can photograph your emotion as well as your body.
Most photographers will allow you to edit your maternity portraits before you decide which ones to print. This may be done online or if you've opted for a more comprehensive service, with the photographer herself. At this stage you can ask to crop, enlarge or combine different photos as you wish and can choose how they should be presented or framed.
Prices and service vary enormously form photographer to photographer. Expect to pay at least $250 for a basic studio session and up to $1000 for a package that includes at-home maternity portraits as well as pictures of your newborn, a website, slideshow and an album of 24 prints.
