Finding the perfect outfit for a special occasion is difficult at any time but if you're pregnant your options for maternity formal wear are even more limited. And even if you go to plenty of formal events, you know in advance that you'll get limited use out of maternity wear, and the thought of buying maternity formal dresses can just seem ridiculous.

Luckily you've got plenty of options. If you know there are only a limited number of formal events you'll need to attend during your pregnancy you could consider hiring a dress. It's a cost effective way of dealing with the problem and you'll still get a glamorous outfit for the special event. The Internet or the classified ads at the back of pregnancy magazines are a good place to start looking for hire shops.

Alternatively take a look at your local consignment store or thrift store - you'll often find used maternity formal wear in these shops that has barely been worn as well as never worn over stock or 'smoke-damaged' maternity evening wear. Check carefully for rips, stains or broken fastenings though. For semi formal events you can often get away with a stylish top and skirt with some great accessories to give it a lift.

Your options for buying new formal maternity wear

If you're determined to buy new maternity formal wear or need a maternity prom dress you can expect to pay anything from about $150 to $750 depending on the style and designer you choose. Empire line dresses work particularly well with a growing bump and can help to elongate the body making you look taller and slimmer. Opt for dresses in fabrics that hang well, chiffon, crepe or light silk will flow with your body and flatter its shape but a starchy taffeta or heavy silk will tend to accentuate your bump.

All large maternity wear shops have a formal wear section and a good range of semi formal wear but it's a good idea to visit as many as you can as most only hold a limited stock. If possible buy something with adjustable fasteners or stretch fabrics as you'll get the most wear from it. If you can't fit into the coat or jacket you'd normally wear to special events invest in a luxurious throw - it'll keep you warm at the end of the evening and can be worn long after you've had your baby. Think carefully about your choice of shoes too - swollen feet won't squash into pre-pregnancy shoes and high heels will only make your legs ache. Low-heeled pumps are a good compromise and should get you through the evening in style.
