Cheap maternity clothes are essential for any mother-to-be whose expanding belly and enlarging chest have forced them out of their own clothes. It's great to be able to invest in a few key designer items but when you know you're only going to be able to wear your new clothes for a few months it's a lot easier on the mind, and the purse, to find cheap maternity clothes instead.

Making do with what you've got or can get

The best way to economize on maternity wear is to really know what you need and only buy the essentials. Don't rush out and buy a whole new wardrobe the moment you find out you're pregnant: you've no idea how quickly your body will grow or how big you're going to get and it's essential that your maternity clothes fit properly. Wait until your old clothes begin to feel tight and if you can, make do for a while by leaving the top button on your pants open and just covering it up with a longer shirt. Borrowing your partner's pants or shirts might also be a good idea and don't forget to ask friends, family and neighbors if they've got maternity wear you can borrow.

Sourcing cheap maternity clothes

Maternity wear is a specialty item and because of this it often has a specialty price tag. Try on 'normal' clothes in larger sizes than you would normally wear and see if you can get away with them for a while. Later in pregnancy you're going to have to go for proper maternity clothes as the cut will cover your bump without messing up hem lines or gathering the fabric into an unsightly bunch around your rear end. Super stores, department stores, consignment stores and the more affordable clothing chains all sell maternity ranges and are a good source of cheap maternity clothes. Alternatively thrift stores and online retailers can be great place to pick up a bargain and as maternity wear is worn for such a short period of time most of the items are in excellent condition.
What to look out for in cheap maternity clothing

Always try on the clothes you're planning to buy, even if you're feeling tired, and make sure the fit and cut is flattering. Although you'll want clothes that are easy to wash and don't require ironing, beware of second-rate fabrics in cheap maternity wear: they won't wear well, won't hang well and may fade or wear out quickly. If you're looking at clothes in consignment or thrift stores always check for flaws. Be particularly careful about zips, buttons, ripped seams and pockets and take a view on whether they're worth fixing. If you're buying used clothes online don't be afraid to ask about the condition of the garment and request a photo of any damaged area.
