When buying maternity apparel it's particularly important to get clothes that fit properly. Not only will they look better, but they'll provide better support to your growing bump and stressed out limbs.
Underwear should be your first consideration. It's not just an intimate article of clothing any more but an essential method of support. A well-fitted bra gives crucial support to your enlarged breasts and nursing bras give easy access at feeding times. Maternity briefs and panty hose can give extra support below your bump helping to ease back and leg pain. There's more information on maternity underwear on our pages on maternity lingerie and maternity bras.
For all other clothes you're looking for something stretchy and comfortable. The best option is to buy clothes that have adjustable waists, buttons or fasteners as they can expand with your bump. Alternatively, you can replace elastic waistbands with drawstrings and leave enough length and room to let the pants open out as your bump grows.
In general, long loose tops and dresses hang better over a bump, but you need to make sure that there's enough room at the front of your maternity apparel to accommodate your bump – as it grows it will pull the material forward and if there isn't enough space it will bunch up around your rear end instead. So although you might think plus size fashions are the best bet they still won't sit or hang properly on a pregnant body. And if you're looking for summer dresses go for designs with broad straps as these distribute the weight better and won't dig into your skin.
Many pregnant women forget about shoes when considering their maternity apparel, but as your feet swell you may find that your old reliables feel pretty tight. Lace-up shoes are best at accommodating swollen feet but when you've got a bump the size of a small whale it can be extremely difficult to bend down and tie them up. Slip on shoes or velcroed sandals might be a good option instead.
Maternity apparel you should avoid
Regardless of fit there are some maternity clothes you should avoid. Skirts, pants or underwear with elastic waistbands shouldn't be worn once they begin to feel tight. Elastic waistbands that are too tight can restrict your blood flow and cause swelling as well as various other health problems. The same goes for hold-up stockings, garters or knee socks with elastic tops these can restrict blood flow in the legs and can lead to varicose veins.
Opt for waistbands that sit below your bump rather than stretch across it. And when buying skirts or dresses, avoid maternity dress patterns with a hemline above the knee – as your bump grows the hemline rises and you'll end up wearing a mini skirt instead.
