The change of name expresses a change of emphasis to match the cultural shifts which the country has experienced since the organisation was set up in London in 1943 (during, note, the dark Blitz days of the Second World War).
Today, Relate UK offers advice and therapy on a variety of subjects such as family, marriage, and relationships - not just to married couples but to those in other kinds of committed relationships and to single people. In fact, it’s the biggest provider of relationship counselling and sex therapy in the country. There’s also family counselling for situations such as the problems which can occur between parents and children when the latter hit their teens, or when a remarriage brings new additions to the family unit.
You can arrange to meet a Relate counsellor face to face, or talk to them over the phone. There’s also an online consultancy service which allows you to email Relate UK and receive a personal response. The courses run by the organisation include one to help prepare couples about to undertake a commitment together, be it buying a house, getting married or having a baby, and courses on anger management and how to deal with becoming single again.
If you want to explore the issues covered by Relate in a less personal way, there are lots of publications, including guides on what to expect from and how to cope with the arrival of a new baby; the reasons for and effects of an affair on a relationship; advice on recommitment to a partnership; advice on how to ‘stop arguing, start talking’; and an exploration of the feelings and coping strategies involved in breaking up with someone. You can buy them from bookshops or order them from Relate UK, but some should be available in your public library.
