Finding a marriage counsellor is the first step to take towards repairing a damaged relationship.
However agreeing to undertake marriage counselling in the first place can be a difficult decision for many couples or particuarly for one couple in the union.
In reality, the cost, in every sense of the word, may be far less than that of splitting up. Things might work out between partners as each learns new things about and news ways to relate to the other.
Alternatively, separation and/or divorce might sometimes turn out to be the agreed option. At least if the situation has been rationally examined there may be some peace of mind for those involved amidst the difficult times.
It’s not that hard to find a marriage counsellor – it’s finding the right one for you that is important. One thing to bear in mind is that while a counsellor’s experience and credentials may be very good, it’s important to make sure that they have the particular skills required for relationship counselling.
When you locate a possible marriage counsellor, ask him or her how often they work with couples and whether they are specifically trained to do so. Choosing a marriage counsellor also involves other factors, such as their approach and personality. It’s important in any counselling that a rapport is established between counsellor and client/s.
There is also good information at the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy www.aamft.org. There’s also a wealth of literature on the subject. Online resources include the British-based Relate site www.relate.org.uk.
