Family and marriage counsellors can help to deal with some very delicate issues - whether it be coping with a child, or maintaining the relationship between two individuals in a marriage.

The arrival and growth of a child may well be one of the great miracles of life, but it is not always an easy ride for a marriage.

Many problems can arise within a family unit with new stresses and worries. Sometimes it can be hard to see the wood for the trees. That’s where family and marriage counsellors come in.

Some of the issues which arise between parents and/or between parents and their children are very common, perhaps even universal: the sense of displacement fathers and older children may feel in the face of the intimacy between a newborn baby and mother; a parent’s awareness of distance as the individual child grows into his or her own personality, with the flaws and strengths and differences that all human beings possess; the sense of disillusionment a child may feel when they first realise that their parents are not perfect; the shock and potential angst – for all concerned! – when adolescence arrives.

Equally, there are contingent but common issues such as those associated with divorce and remarriage – experiences which can be very disorientating and painful for children as well as, if not more than, the adults involved.

Step children may find it hard to accept new parents, who in turn may find it difficult to understand why their partner’s child is so rude and distant. As we’ve said, none of these things are particularly out of the ordinary, but they can manifest themselves in painful ways which challenge the relationships of parent to child and parent to parent.

For many people, talking about problems with family and marriage counsellors can help to show a way through them. There are problems, such as issues of physical, sexual or substance abuse, which it might seem impossible to overcome. Skilled family and marriage counsellors can be particularly important in cases like these – their experience and training might be the first thing to provide a damaged family with any assurance that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
