Serious questions about the health of a marriage can happen at any time but it’s often when there is major change in life circumstances: the arrival of a new baby; a shift in a couple’s economic situation; death or care of parents or other family members. There is also the ever present risk of sexual problems or one of the couples having an affair.
These can all be overcome with understanding, rational thinking, and some reflection about the real meaning of love and what it means to a couple affected by unexpected circumstances. Even when it feels as though all the love has disappeared it may just be hiding and all it takes is time and relationship management to get things back on track.
One interesting development is the growth in divorce and marital problems among people of retirement age. There is some statistical evidence suggesting that couples in their sixties or even older now appear to be more likely to split up. An increase in life expectancy, a cultural shift towards greater freedom of expression and more economic independence for women may all be contributing factors to this perceived increase in ‘grey’ divorces.
There’s also the ‘seven year itch’ theory, which arises from a statistical observation that a larger proportion of marriages which falter, falter in this year. Even people who haven’t been married could imagine why this might be the case. It’s a human characteristic which applies to many situations in life, as indicated by generous amount of clichés which describe it.
Novelties wear off, familiarity breeds contempt, a change is as good as a rest, etc. etc. It’s not as easy to think of a cliché which describes the alternative possibility, but this is also recognizable as a human truth – that the end of the heady first act doesn’t necessarily require the players to leave the theatre: a relationship may mature, but it doesn’t have to die.
Those of us who have been lucky enough to watch our parents grow old happily in each other’s company know that relationships can be a very long voyage of discovery and change and that there are always surprises in store.
Not every marriage, perhaps, can or should survive. But a relationship in which two people have almost invariably invested a good deal of their time, emotions and – it has to be said – money, surely deserves examination if it becomes ill.
Every one of us is complex and many-layered, with strengths and weaknesses, assumptions and beliefs which affect the chemistry of our close relationships. It’s impossible to know what will happen in life, but it seems certain that knowing oneself and one’s partner as well as possible can only make things easier.
Marriages which work take work: the general aim of marriage counsellors might be seen as helping a couple learn together how (and whether) to undertake this, and to find out more about each other in a neutral environment.
There are various kinds of marriage counsellors to suit various situations, such as pre-marriage, Christian, family and divorce counsellors. Online counselling services are also becoming increasingly popular.
