Road tax is also known as vehicle excise duty (VED). It is administered by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). The DVLA is an agency in the Department for Transport, and covers local government and regions in the UK. It is accountable to ministers and the Secretary of State for Transport, and to parliament and the public through them. The primary aims of the DVLA is to facilitate general law enforcement and road safety by maintaining the register of vehicles and drivers and to collect taxation in the form of road tax.
Vehicle excise duty differs according to the type of vehicle, and variables associated with it. They can be paid in advance for up to a year or six months, with a year being better value than six months. The table and figures below are taken from the DVLA’s website (at www.dvla.co.uk).
Private/light goods vehicles registered before 1st March 2001 are taxed according to their engine size – so for 1549cc or less it’s £105 a year, and for more than 1549cc it’s £160 a year. For vehicles registered after 1st March 2001, the CO 2 emmission figures are divided into bands for g/km.
