What do I do if there is damage to my car?
An accident in the truest sense of the word is a fortuitous event that could not have been predicted or controlled until it actually happened. Some people drive very badly and then call a crash into a lamppost an ‘accident’, in some ways it is, although if they were a better driver it may not have occurred. Some people may lock their cars up in a garage with an alarm and an immobiliser and still their car could be stolen, or at least an attempt would be made. That is also an ‘accident’. When things like this happen you may need to make a claim on your motor insurance policy.
This doesn’t always happen due to an accident between two parties. The car could have had its windscreen chipped, or may have caught fire, or been broken into. The damage or loss that can arise from these occurrences could be termed as ‘claim events’. What should you do if you have been unlucky enough, or even careless enough to have had a claim event happen to you?
In the past the whole process was manual. After an event you would be given a claim form by your insurance broker and have to run around town getting quotes. Your broker would then have to post the form to the company. Your insurance company would take days to respond to the form and send down an engineer to inspect the car both pre and post-repair work.
The onset of the computer and the introduction of ‘direct’ insurance in the 1980s has revolutionised all this. Speed of service has improved dramatically, whether you have bought insurance from a broker or a direct insurer.
Should you have comprehensive cover you can call for help from the scene of the accident to get your car towed to the insurer’s nearest approved retailer, which has instant authorisation to repair it. You should get provided with a courtesy or hire car whilst the work is carried out. Your car will come back to you in a few days if the work is not too serious.
You don’t have to phone your insurer until you get home and you’ll probably find that the recovery service or approved repairer have already told them of the accident. The insurer will record your telephone conversation and fill in a form on their computer screens (you’ll rarely be asked to fill one out). Insurers have been slow to adopt claim reporting over the internet.
Should you have a broker, they’ll have email links to the insurer or will report the claim for you. Brokers have improved their service to stop being superseded completely by direct insurers.
