I've had an accident, now what?
You may think that you’re too good a driver to have an car accident. However, in many cases, it’s nothing to do with how good a driver you are. You should remember, there are still a large amount of Austin metros still on the road!
Should you have an accident, and only have third party insurance, only your passengers are covered, not your actual car. So you just need to worry about the scrapes and the dents to your own car and perhaps yourself. You’ll find it very difficult to prove that you are blameless in a crash and proving that you’re blameless is the only way you’ll get your repairs paid for.
Should you have comprehensive cover, your passengers AND your car will receive good treatment, but you are unlikely to be covered for more than about £5000 for personal injury under your insurance. That should take care of one broken fingernail these days, aren’t you worth more?
If you think so, think about asking your car insurer for personal injury cover to be upped to a respectable figure for quite a small additional sum. You should try and get it up to a figure that would at least get your leg sewn back on.
Should you be involved in an accident, try and drum up a picture of Corporal Jones from Dad’s Army shouting “DON’T PANIC” and you’ll help yourself greatly. You must stop after an accident by law and you have to report the accident to the police by law within 4 hours if there has been an injury. You should report it to the police anyway and get an incident number, which can be useful during a tricky claim.
Whatever happens, don’t lose your temper and don’t allow yourself to be drawn into an argument about whose fault the accident was. Don’t ever admit liability even if there is no chance whatsoever that you weren’t completely to blame. You mustn’t drive off by law and you shouldn’t really even move the cars at all before you have an independent witness note their position. This is unless by not moving your cars you are causing a 20 mile jam on the M6, in which case yes, you should move. Finally, even if the person you’ve been involved in an accident with is an absolute blithering idiot, don’t punch them, under any circumstances.
What you SHOULD do is exchange personal and insurance details with the other driver. Get details of witnesses. Take down registration number of all vehicles involved, in case you’ve been given duff information. Write down as soon as you can exactly what happened, including a diagram. Finally, tell your insurance company as soon as possible. They should take it from there.
