Designing funeral programs on behalf of someone else is often a daunting task for many.
While all funeral homes will offer the service of making the program for your loved one’s service, helping them do it, or designing it yourself at home can help with the grief process.
Even though the thought of getting artistic can be daunting, here are some free tips to help make the process a little easier.
Firstly, sit with family members and think about what you would like to go into the program - their input is important in honoring the deceased.
The average program is based over a four-page layout (although you can have it as long as you desire), and there are some basic elements and details that are essential in all funeral programs, including details of the deceased (such as birthday and date of death), a photo, order of service (naming the clergy, people doing readings and songs), names of pallbearers and location details. Draw up a sample of it first to figure out exactly what you want.
There are a number of other special touches you can add to the program that will make it unique to that person. A quote that sums up the personality of deceased; piece of scripture or even a full obituary outlining their life can personalize the booklet.
Printing the program on paper that is the favorite color of the deceased makes a nice touch, or even adding extra pages that are a montage of photos from throughout their life is a great idea.
Funeral programs can be made on your home computer using programs such as Word or Publisher (which allows for easier use and placement of photographs).
