Funeral costs are steadily on the rise throughout the world, with prices often increasing faster than inflation. A typical funeral costs more than £1200 ($2,500) in the United States than in the United Kingdom according to statistics from both countries.
Figures from the US National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) show as of July 2004, the average funeral costs $6,500 (£3250) – and that’s not including burial cost, whereas according to the Oddfellows Funeral Costs Survey, the United Kingdom equivalent costs only £1900 ($3800).
Generally cremations are a cheaper option than burial, with the average cremation in the United Kingdom costing £830 ($1650US) less than its burial counterpart.
And while the average funeral in the United States sits at $6,500 (£3250) (and remember, that’s without the burial and extras such as flowers and cards), there is an estimate many go well over that price and can cost in excess £5000 ($10,000).
Every funeral is different, and as people’s needs vary, so will the cost of the funeral that they have planned. Below is a break down of what a typical traditional funeral could cost. Note that this list does not include burial costs or grave marker/headstone costs, which can add another couple of thousand dollars onto the final costs.

Paying for the funeral can come from a number of means. Usually the costs are taken from the deceased’s estate, from sources such as bank accounts, insurance policies or a funeral pre-plan insurance policy. If there is not enough money in the estate to cover the funeral, then the person or persons organizing the funeral is in charge of paying for it.
Be prepared to shop around. While it seems an easy enough thing to do at a normal phase in your life, a grieving person may not have the desire to search for the cheapest option. To help do this, take a person who is not so entrenched in grief along to help choose products and get a fair price that you can afford.
