Funeral caskets are one of the most expensive items associated with a funeral, with the average casket costing around £1000 ($2000), and prices climbing up to more than £5000+ ($10,000+) for a casket with luxury features.

A traditional solidwood casket (such as a maple or oak) is the first thing that springs to mind when people think of caskets. But the casket (or coffin as they are often referred as) doesn’t have to be a budget-blowing item for grieving families when making arrangements, with several cheaper alternatives available on the market – for example, a simple plywood casket costs less than £200 ($400).

Other cheaper options include steel caskets. A 20-gauge non-gasket steel casket can start at around $800. These can come in a variety of colors and finishes. Themed caskets are also made of steel, and feature and artistic picture covering the whole of the casket – usually they are scenes depicting interests of the deceased. Note that very few crematories accept steel caskets for cremation.

For those on a very strict budget, most funeral homes offer a casket rental service where customers can rent the casket for the funeral and viewing purposes, and the deceased is buried or cremated in an inexpensive casket.

If price isn’t a major factor in your decisions, and you want a mid-range casket to send your loved one on in, a solidwood one is a fitting selection. They come in various woods, from mahogany to poplar, and cost around a couple of thousand dollars.

While stainless steel caskets are relatively cheap, at the other end of the scale there are bronze and caskets for a truly decadent sendoff. Due to the precious metals used in there construction, these can be priced into the tens of thousands.

Internet based dealers are a far cheaper alternative than buying a casket from a funeral home who impose drastic mark ups on their products. You can save large amounts by shopping online, with most dealers being able to deliver overnight. Federal law says that a funeral home cannot charge you extra or a handling fee if you decide to provide your own casket from a different source.

If you do decide to buy from a funeral home, ask to see their General Price List and all the options available – not all have their complete collection of funeral caskets on display, and there may be a more suitable and cheaper option available.
